For your initial post, think of a specific child (either one you work with or have a personal connection to), and use your knowledge of that child to respond to the questions:

1) Where does the child live and whom do they live with? Is it a single household or more than one? What is the home environment like?

2) Do they spend substantial time with extended family members or other important adults, such as grandparents or godparents?

3) How do these relationships influence their upbringing?

4) Is the child involved in any systems such as foster care or the youth justice system?

5) How does this impact their daily life and development?

6) Does the child experience frequent relocations or instability in their living situation, such as homelessness or living with caregivers who are migrant workers or active in the military?

7) What school-based clubs, sports, or activities does the child participate in? How do these extracurricular activities contribute to their growth and social interactions?

8) What, if any, before school, afterschool, or summer programs and activities is the child involved in? How do these programs support their learning and development?

9) How does the child spend their time online? Are they engaging in educational content, playing video games, or maintaining connections with distant family members or friends?

10) Do you know how the child spends their weekends? Are there family outings, hobbies, or special traditions that shape their leisure time?

Week 3 Discussion 2

As aspiring leaders in the field of early childhood education, it is your responsibility to make sure that you are not only teaching your students about the diversity of the world but also promoting social justice through implementing an anti-bias curriculum. For this discussion, you will need to choose one of the four main goals of anti-bias education listed in the chart from Derman-Sparks and Edwards’s book and address the points given here as they relate to your chosen goal. Please make sure to support your initial reply with references to the anti-bias goal and at least one additional scholarly source.

In your initial post,

1) Explain in your own words what this goal means to you and how it connects to social justice.

2) Discuss how you would foster an understanding of your goal within your education setting.

3) Analyze at least two challenges you perceive in achieving this goal.

4) Provide at least one ethical solution to each of the challenges you shared.

5) Share two developmentally appropriate methods that you will use in your work with children to foster development of this goal.
