National Debt

Please contribute your thoughts on the size of the national debt.     The  U.S. borrows money through issuing bonds and other vehicles.   How  much debt is too much for the American economy.?  There is a wide  variety of views on this subject  (for every 4 economists there are 5  opinions).  The expected contribution would be roughly a page,   No  opinion is too radical.
