Overview

Epidemiology is the science that looks at causes, distribution and disease control in populations. Community health nurses need to have an understanding of epidemiologic principles in order to provide quality care for whole populations. Causality, risk and rate of occurrence of a disease will have tremendous impact on prevention, response and recovery in the community.

Discussion Question:

Discuss social determinants of health. What are they and how do they contribute to the development of disease? Describe the chain of infection. What are some ways community health nurses can break this chain? Provide specific examples.
