You have viewed many if not all of the 23 Composer Showcase Videos dispersed throughout the six modules of content found in this course.  Choose one composer that stood out to you the most, and write a short essay outlining the following areas...

1. Why you chose this composer

2. Name one piece that attracted you to the musical style of this composer

3. Does this composer represent the musical era in which he/she was practicing in? (For example; does Hector Berlioz represent the underlying cultural, stylistic, and artistic idioms that you learned about present in the early 19th century?)

You have been given a very concise introduction to music which encompasses many different genres, styles, time periods, etc.  Which of these styles of music sparked your interest the most?  Please provide at least two examples of musical works from this style/genre/period that will help your classmates and myself understand your feelings.  Please remember to use vocabulary and terminology that you have learned over the span of this course. 

Use this to write the essay: Romanticism and Impressionism

In Module Five - Part I we will learn of the momentous social and political forces that shaped nineteenth-century history and the arts, and we will explore the impact of the Industrial Revolution on music, the rising democratization of society, and the development of the highly expressive Romantic style. We will observe the union of words and music in the German Lied, and discover the genre's standard forms. We will come to understand the importance of the piano in the musical life of the nineteenth-century and to view the short, lyric piano piece as the instrumental equivalent of the Lied. We will observe the originality and virtuosity of the music of Frédéric Chopin, and note nationalistic traits in his works. We will also meet the virtuoso pianist/composer Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel and learn of the challenges that women faced as composers during this era.

Requirements:

-cite at least two musical examples

-use of musical vocabulary and terminology to help demonstrate your thoughts

-correctly cite any references, quotations, etc. using MLA format
