Ensure you have your ADDITIONAL research articles (x2) intended to be used in your Literature Review for later.

ASSIGNMENT: Concert reports should discuss the musical aspects of a performance and how it affected your listening experience. In addition to the specific questions below, consider answering: What made you connect with the music? Did you recognize the form of the piece being performed? What type of music was being performed? Etc. Think of the following while viewing the concert/event.

Basics: Please write a concise overview of the concert, including the artist's name and background, the venue (UMass Boston Recital Hall), the date, and the time. Also, provide the following: 

Additional Questions:

1. When you listen to a new piece of music, are you open-minded or do you find its unfamiliarity to be an obstacle to processing and accepting it without judgment? Please share your thoughts and experiences with new and unfamiliar music.

2. Name and describe three themes that the guest artist explored in their music. These can include musical themes (such as polyphonic melodies, hymns, tonality), style themes (rock songs, classical, jazz styles, etc.), or conceptual themes (inspirations, techniques used, concepts described).

3. Of all the songs/pieces you heard in today's live concert, which one stood out to you in some way, and why?

I attended an in-class concert during my Intro to Music class at UMass Boston on February 16, 2023. The classroom, and venue, is the recital hall at UMB in the University Hall building. The soloist performing was David Russell, a classical guitarist from Spain who was on tour and in the area performing other concerts regionally. Born in Glasgow, UK, David is a Grammy Award-winning musician and was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Guitar Foundation of America in 2018. (DavidRussellGuitar.com)

I consider myself an open-minded listener, though there are styles of music I like more than others. The unfamiliarity of a style generally does not hinder my accepting of the music, and in this particular case, I was not familiar with the music performed - solo classical guitar. 

David was playing at a world-class level and discussed the various aspects of many of the songs which included a song by JS Bach, “Prelude in G,” a Romantic Era song by Tarrega, “Adelita,” and one original composition by the artist described as a contemporary classical mashup.

Of all the songs performed in this one-hour-long concert, the one that stood out most to me was “Hallelujah” composed by Leonard Cohen. I know the original version of this song by Cohen and the popular version by Jeff Buckley, but in this case, it was arranged for a solo guitar with no words sung. I found it striking yet enjoyable and I liked the sounds of the solo guitar.

Part 1 - Emic documentation: 
First, listen to any song of your choosing, then document the following

1. What you listened to? (List the song title, band or artist name, year created, published, or posted, and style of music if you know it.)

2. Where did you listen? (List the location, date/time, and platform [live, album, Spotify, etc])

3. Why did you choose the song? Write a detailed description. (Was it your mood, activity, or a special occasion?) What does it make you feel?

Part 2 - Etic documentation: 
After completing part 1, listen to the song posted by the professor (see below), then document the following

1. Observe and analyze your experience while listening to the song posted by the professor. List the performer, song title, composer, and genre, and refer to these specifically when writing.

2. How does this song make you feel?  How did your experience differ from your chosen song for part 1?

3. What questions did these new experiences make you think about?

You must answer all items above to get full credit for your submission. Remember, this is not a song analysis, it is an analysis of how the song makes you feel and think.

Listening/Viewing Log assignment 2 (3, 4, etc) -  (your student name)

Part 1: One day this week I listened to "Have You Met Miss Jones" the jazz standard composed by Richard Rogers and played by solo guitarist Sean McGowan. I chose this song because I had ordered the vinyl and it just arrived. I listened to it on Thursday 1/18/24 in my home on an old analog stereo system I've had for a while. I love listening to solo guitar playing, and jazz, and this helped me mellow out for a few minutes.

Part 2: When listening to the assigned etic piece, "Djinn Song" composed and performed by Rikie Kej, I noticed that I had never really listened to this style of music, Indian Pop, before. It made me feel relaxed but also interested in discovering what it's like to hear words sung but not speak the language - in this case Hindi. So I looked up the translation by Google search. Then it dawned on me that this EXPERIENCE of not knowing the style of music, the words, or the instruments played was new for me. I felt like dancing for sure, but that is very different when compared to the music that I chose for part 1 of this assignment which I know well and love. This experience made me wonder if other people get the same feeling when they hear music they're not familiar with.
