Muckraking and Its Effects on Government Oversight

Directions: Consider the efforts journalists and activists used to force the state and federal governments to step in on matters they would otherwise ignore. Thanks to the efforts of Upton Sinclair, Jacob Riis, and Jane Addams, men and women living in urban settings began to use the media of the time to put a spotlight on what life really was like for many of the poor and working classes. In your paper, please answer the following questions:

1. Why was it so easy to overlook the poor and working classes?
2. Why was big business so against regulations on child labor?
3. Would it be fair to say that government oversight was necessary? Why or why not?
