This week's online discussion/share is on the following tasks:

1) As children learn mathematics, helping them notice mathematics in daily life contexts and connect mathematics to real life can be a helpful way to extend math learning and promote interest in math. However, math displayed in daily life can also be a source of confusion and anxiety for children. An exercise I invite you to do this week is to examine the grocery ads you receive in your home mailbox or in grocery stores. Pay attention to the details of the ads, such as the listing of prices and deals. Share (embed in or attach to post) a couple of photos of advertisement/specials and talk about how "math" as seen in these photos is not accurate and confusing to children who are in the process of learning mathematics. In what ways can these examples affect how children learn mathematics? If you were to utilize these real-life examples to teach math, what need you pay attention to?

2) Browse the sample lesson "What is the real name for 'eleven?" Critique the lesson in light of explicit instruction and what you know about the learning and teaching of teen numbers from this week's readings. Specifically, point out the strengths of the lesson and share ideas for adapting this lesson for the diverse learners you have in mind.
