Modify Poetry

  1. Select one classmate’s work to work with. Use the “Getting Your Work in Shape” document, plus your own craft knowledge, to revise the draft. Focus on making beautiful sentences or lines of poetry where every word choice is perfect, and there are no unnecessary words—the “Getting Your Work in Shape” document will guide you through this.
    1. You may only respond to a classmate’s work that doesn’t already have a response (so that each student has exactly one response).
    2. Feel free to offer a brief explanation of why you made the revisions you did, or how effective you think your revisions are. This is not required, but it could be very useful for the original author’s creative process.
  2. After a classmate has shared a revision of your work, post some thoughts about the revision you received. In your response, focus on how the revision changes your original vision of your work, for better or worse (it’s OK to be honest). What do you see in the revision that you might be able to apply to the rest of your work, and how might that strengthen your work? What do you see in the revision that changes your vision of what your work is or how it works? If you feel the revision would drive your work in the wrong direction, explain why you believe you should not follow the direction of the revision.
