Personhood
Personhood is one of the most important moral and ethical concepts in philosophy. The question of who counts as a person comes up in issues like the abortion debate, the controversy over animal rights, and problems about personal identity. What features make a person a person? As we put it in philosophy, what are the necessary conditions for personhood, and when does a being possess enough of these necessary conditions to count as a full-fledged person in the morally and legally binding sense?
Artificial intelligence and personhood
With the advent of AI, personhood comes to the forefront again. We ask, can an AI be a person? Should an AI that exactly replicates human action and speech be thought of as having rights and a personal identity? This debate used to be science fiction, but now with the invention of AI, the problem has started to solidify into a real dilemma. Consider the cute AI actress Tilly Norwood, for example. Can an AI like her have its own identity in a legally and morally binding sense? Can an AI possess a legally binding contract in their own name? For example, should an AI be able to inherit property? Or be charged with a crime?
