Did you know that in the sunshine state of Florida a private person cannot own solar cells, produce energy, and sell it back to their electric utility company at a rate greater than what he or she consumes in his or her household? What has happened? What are solar panels? Present to the class what obstacles a person who wants to have a solar farm on his or her property might encounter. Explain what role government is having in this industry. Explain in economic terms what an increase in solar farms would have on the price of energy. Explain what private industry is doing to keep the price of energy higher than its equilibrium. How would deregulation affect the electrical utility industry and thus solar panels?
