One of the directives given for conducting a SWOT analysis is " look for causes not characteristics". However, if you look at the SWOT matrix, it lists characteristics. The output of SWOT analysis appears to be a listing of characteristics.

. So, what is meant by the statement "look for causes, not for characteristics?"
