People with co-occurring physical and mental conditions represent a significant portion of the U.S. population. According to The Synthesis Project: New Insights From Research Results, physical disorders may lead to mental disorders, and physical conditions may place a person at risk for certain mental disorders. Mental and physical disorders may share common risk factors. With this information in mind, explain the following statement: “The pathways causing comorbidity is complex and bidirectional.”
