Mathematical Statistics for PSY 300 Course (MAJOR PROJECT)

Sheet 1 in the Excel file (ANOVA) contains data from a study that includes a categorical variable (the IV) and a continuous variable (the DV).  You will see that the categorical variable has three levels, but they are not labeled other than “1”, “2”,and “3”.  Thus, your task is to design a study that this data could feasibly have come from and then analyze it in Excel using a one-way ANOVA.

a.You will first determine what the IV is and what the levels of the IV will be.  For example, if I wanted to use the data for a study on beer goggles, I might say that level one was no alcohol, level two was 2 drinks and level 3 was 4 drinks.

b.You will next determine what the DV represents.  In my example, I might say that the values are scores for attractiveness ratings of an image that was presented to

participants who had consumed the specified amounts of alcohol.

c.You will then provide a write-up that includes the following elements:

       i. A description of the research design and hypothesis.  That is, tell me briefly

what was done in the study (e.g., participants were randomly assigned to drink

a certain amount of alcohol before viewing and rating an image) and what you

expect to find (e.g., it is expected that participants will find the image more

attractive the more alcohol they have consumed). Your expectation should be

based on prior research, so make sure that you find one study that can help you

generate your hypothesis.

ii.Present the result of the data analysis, in appropriate APA style, in conjunction

with a conclusion describing what the result of the test means in terms of the

hypothesis (e.g., did alcohol affect attractiveness?).

Sheet 2 in the Excel file (CORRELATION) contains data from a study that includes two continuous dependent variables. Your task is to design a study that this data could feasibly have come from and analyze it by calculating a Pearson correlation.

a. You will first determine what the two DVs represent. For example, I might decide that DV 1 is a measure of exercise frequency (with higher values = more exercise) and DV 2 is a measure of well-being (with higher values = greater well-being).

b.You will then provide a write-up that includes the following elements:

       i. A description of the research design and hypothesis. That is, tell me briefly

what was done in the study (e.g., researchers measured both exercise frequency

and well-being from a sample of participants) and what you expect to find. Your

expectation should be based on prior research, so make sure that you find one

study that can help you generate your hypothesis.

ii. Present the result of the data analysis, in appropriate APA style, in conjunction

with a conclusion describing what the result of the test means in terms of the

hypothesis.

To submit:

Your task is to make up the study variables, calculate the requested statistical tests and present the results to the researcher in a document uploaded (.doc, .docx or.pdf) via Canvas. In addition to using Excel to conduct the statistical analysis, you will need to figure out what the data represents and what the hypothesis for the research would be.  This requires that you do some background research.  You should find at least one research article that explores the issues you have

decided to study (one for the ANOVA data and one for the correlational data) and use them to generate your research design and expectations.  For example, in my ANOVA example, I would locate a study that had previously looked at the effects of alcohol on rating of attractiveness. (You only need to find one article to generate your prediction, no need to do a complete search of the literature to figure out what

multiple studies have found). Your final submitted version should include the following elements:

1. A paragraph describing the study design (specifying what your variables represent and how the study was conducted) and hypotheses along with the

results of the statistical test (in APA style).  End with a conclusion about what the test result means in terms of the prediction.

2. An APA style citation for the article you used to generate your hypothesis.

3.Lastly, you must include one graph – either for theANOVA data or the correlational data. Please note that you will have 2 versions of each of the first two elements, one for each set of data, and one graph for the data set of your choosing.

Make sure to read through the instructions carefully before you proceed. Use the material below in attached files to complete the tasks.

Use the posted resources on Canvas to help you use Excel in order to effectively analyze the data.  Below is the grading rubric.  Please review it so you know what your grade is based on Element Points and What I’m looking for to earn full credit:

Statistical Tests 10 points:  Calculation of values is accurate Results are interpreted correctly. Conclusions are stated clearly and connected to hypotheses

Research Designs 15 points: Research design makes sense and fits with the data

Research design is creative and thoughtful Description of variables is clear and appropriate Predictions are clearly stated as hypotheses for each study

Predictions are based on prior research

Graph 5 points: Graphed values are accurate

Graph is appropriate to the data set

Axes are labeled appropriately

APA style 5 points: Results are presented correctly APA style

Citations are presented correctly in APA style
