This final week we are to discuss three ways that technology is changing the paradigms of leadership. This week’s lesson confirmed much of what I already knew or suspected. The age of technology and information has enabled humanity to accomplish a great deal more than we have been able to accomplish in the past. Technology has specifically enabled remote development teams, greater connectivity for better communication/sharing of work and social media plays a significant role in customer engagement.
Once upon a time the idea of remote development teams was just that… An idea. Twenty years ago, there were technological limitations to what could be stored and transferred over the internet. Now, organizations can be comprised of nothing but remote teams. When it comes to developing software, sharing work, or communicating over long distances technological advancement in the last two decades have completing changed how, when and where organizations communicate and work interactively. Leadership has had to adjust to these changes in order to gain or maintain a competitive advantage.
The technological creation of social media is changing the way organizations engage their customers. For example, as of 2009 Starbuck’s stock was declining rapidly, then they hired a digital media officer. Some of his first initiatives were to offer free Wi-Fi at every location and they made their website the landing page to access it. Everything from promotions to new product offering come to consumers via their social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter…etc.) Leadership adapted to changing circumstances and through technology and innovative ideas Starbucks is the premier internet café in the United States (Fitzgerald & Kruschwitz, 2014).

Digital technology has defiantly impacted leadership in positive ways buts also has created new challenges for leaders to manage. One of these ways that technology is impacting leadership is the way leaders are able to communicate. Communication is always a challenge but if leaders can embrace and take the time to learn technology that allows them to communicate more efficiently, they can have a much larger reach pertaining to the impact they make on the company. Many leaders lack the experience it takes to take advantage of new digital technologies that would help them inspire employees.
Leaders during this digital era have to have different mindsets and increased technological capabilities to excel in today’s business climate (Fitzgerald, Kruschwitz, Bonnet, & Welch, 2014). Leaders have to be able to understand the capabilities and the potential impacts of social media, new software’s, and other digital advancements. Most lack urgency in this area because many leaders fail to understand just how much of an advantage digital technologies can give a business (Fitzgerald et. al., 2014). They have to take the time now to learn and create a plan that incorporates new technologies in the business plans and into the goals they have set out to achieve.
Leaders have to be able to adapt quicker than ever before in this digital era on massive scales. Entire business plans are being flipped upside down in most industries with the emergence of ecommerce, automation, social media, cloud computing, and other advancements (Raskino & Waller, 2015). Leaders that fail to be able to quickly adapt will lack the ability to lead effectively in the current world we live in. Technology can give groups the advantage with consumer relationships, communication within a company, and help them streamline operations. Leaders can look for change in so many areas when considering how new digital advancements can improve their company.
