Good afternoon Professor and Classmates,

I hope that everyone is healthy and well during these unusual times. Effective leadership has a direct influence on many factors of an organization to include change, innovation, experimentation, and risks. Leaders play an essential role in the organizational change process, “To foster a successful change initiative, those involved may need to change (Brown, 2012)”. I truly believe that leaders have to lead by example at all times, if the plan is to make an influence and change the culture of the organization, it has to start from the top.

Leaders influence organizational innovation. “People will have more certainty about what is needed and the roles and processes that are more likely to lead to innovation and true transformation (Bushe & Marshak, 2016).” In my experience, leaders can influence the vision of innovation by explaining the importance of innovation and how the organization will benefit from this vision. This goes back to what I mentioned earlier about starting with the leadership, before the leaders influence the idea of innovation, it has to be more critical for the leader than the followers.

“The more successful leaders encouraged numerous small experiments, learning as they went, in a more emergent process of change (Bushe & Marshak, 2016).” Organizations have always been able to benefit from experimenting with new strategies. Those new experiments are excellent factors to determine new approaches that can lead to more efficient productivity. The ultimate goal of an organization is to be successful, experiment, and brainstorming ideas, serve a method to increase team learning and organizational performance.

There has always been the risk of failing in association with effective leadership in the organization. Many leaders had failed in the attempt to effectively communicate the sense of purpose on leading change and innovation. The leader has to prepare to communicate why the change is required in the organization.

The purpose of change within ones organization is to refine the way things have been done, adapt to society or at a larger scale, the necessity of the organization to survive. We have heard the word “change” numerous time, even our previous President Barrack Obama had used it in his 2008 slogan when he said “Change we can believe in.” The word change alone allows us as a whole to believe in something and to invest ourselves for the future. Change is almost mandatory for certain situation. Take for instance the quick example we were given about the book “Our Iceberg Is Melting.” This laid out a colony of penguins living on a melting iceberg and one penguin in particular had voiced that they need to change where they lived. Of course you will see multiple reactions to the big change, a few groups would include the ones who are excited about the change, the ones on the fence, the ones who are skeptical, and the ones who clearly disagrees. Point being, change is a mandatory process for an ongoing journey whether it be a change in the organizations plan or a change in an individual’s life. Innovation is also another word that has been used frequently within an organization. Innovation addresses the ability to always stay ahead of the game and innovation is the driving factor for the success of the organization. I like to think of innovation as a vessel of ingenuity where people alike foster ideas that serves to be for the better good. Experimentation walks hand-in-hand with innovation. With all the innovative ideas floating around, comes with hours on hours of failed experiments. Most people only see the success of the innovative idea, but fail to realize the vast amount of hard work/hours put in to failed experiments. Finally, the risk that is required to be taken in order for the organization to thrived. One of my favorite quotes out there says, “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” This speaks volume, I believe a successful organization have taken their fair share of risks, and have wagered with probability on nothing but a leap of faith, or nothing but a feeling in their gut. I would conclude that change, innovation, experimentation and risks are all the required formula to have a powerful organization.
