Your Wicked Problem Journal, Part 1: Note: It's not Private

Dr. W's Note on Format: This "Journal" is set up in the tool we normally use for DBs, so you post this entry as you would a normal DB post (but it's not a DB--you don't need to read others' posts or comment on them). This makes this a kind of public journal, which I think has some advantages, because it gives us a sense of what we're all working on, which we normally don't get to have, and I don't see I lot of things needing to be kept private coming up in the course of the class. So please know that others may see your post. If you want to articulate something private you can submit an email. And if this is too weird after all is said and done we can change this in future weeks: we can shift to the survey tool, which works fine and is private.

Your Wicked Problem Journal, Part 1

You'll be asked in this course to pick a Wicked Problem and present on how you'll approach it (it's the final project: Wicked Problem Strategy Presentation (https://canvas.williamjames.edu/courses/10774/assignments/131038) ).

For this journal, you're asked to start the process.

Instructions: Choose a Wicked Problem, describe it a little bit, explain how you know it's wicked (refer to Bentley and Toth's definition or another definition you find), and share why it is important to you. If you need some inspiration, see the partial list of Wicked Problems on page 10 of the syllabus. Cite your sources.

(The Wicked Problem you share here may be used for your final due at the end of the semester. Or not, if you settle on something better down the road!)

Week 1 Discussion

It's a traditional discussion, except in groups!  You'll be in a group of three or four, and your job, after your initial post, is to read and respond to your group-mates' posts, and then to reply to their responses to you! Dr. W will generally respond to the group as a whole.

Prompt: Answer the following 3 questions in 350 words or less:

1. What strikes you at first about Wicked Messes / Problems as they are described by Bentley and Toth in the intro and section 1. 2. How do you imagine you'll feel having to lean into these things over the next 10 weeks? 3. How does the situation described by Leyla Acaroglu in her TED Talk fit the definition of Wicked Problem?
