Week 2 – Overview
LP101 – First Year Seminar
Discussion Boards
• Discussion boards are your chance to interact and connect with peers, cohort members and your professors.
• This is the online version of the classroom and the richness of discussion flows from the interaction between those on the boards.
• In many courses in this program a significant number of points towards your overall grade come from the DB
• Getting comfortable with the Canvas system and how to navigate larger discussion boards can help you be more efficient when you reply to peers and respond to those who wrote on your post.
Discussion Boards Best practices include:
• Opening the DB as a first step every week, creating a word document with the question and drafting there, ease of grammar, spelling and word count check before posting
• Setting aside time to read and respond on Thursday and Friday
• Thinking about how to connect with different people on your board
Reading and Research • There can be weeks where you have
significant amounts of readings in multiple classes.
• Skimming, reading for content and deep diving into areas that you want to explore will make it possible for you to balance your grasp of the material and manage your time.
• Remember for electronic articles you can download these for later reference
• We will cover research throughout this course – this week we focus on references
• Mandelay and Zotero are tools you can use to organize materials and resources you gather from courses, for papers and ultimately for your doc project
Week 2 Overview
• No graded assignments are due this week • Don’t forget to watch the meet the faculty video to
meet Dr. Suzanne Devlin, our department director.
• Application opportunities include: • Using what you learned this week on discussion
boards in your other courses. • Building reading and skimming skills as you
approach your work in courses • Downloading Zotero or Mendeley, or both, and
exploring how to use them as you prepare for your first papers.
