What is a LITERATURE REVIEW?

A literature review differs from a research “document” or a “book” review in many substantive ways. In a research document the writer informs the reader with a compelling argument toward a logical end.  The writer selects the resources that support the writer’s conclusion and provides the reader with such documentation. A book review provides a concise summary of what was contained in the book or subset of similar literature. 

A literature review is a scholarly review of the literature (books, articles, thesis, dissertations conference proceedings, etc.) that surrounds the particular issue being studied. The author of a Literature Review provides a description, summary and critical evaluation of each artifact considered in the review. The finished document provides an overview of the significant literature published on the specific topic. The review itself provides historical background, describes issues, debates, theories, concepts and related research. There are a variety of resources available on-line and through the Roosevelt University Library to aid you in creating your own literature review. Your Literature review for this course should be five to six pages in length and utilize a minimum of 8 scholarly references. (Most on-line references would not be considered scholarly – please feel free to consult the University’s librarians for assistance researching your topics.)
