2.1 Discussion: The Calling
Getting Started
Paul states, “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.” What kinds of gifts and talents have you been given for the journey? Perhaps there are many that are still yet to be revealed to you! How will you know who you are and what you have been given unless you step out of your ordinary world and answer the calling of the Holy Spirit who beckons you into a different kind of living, a new world, a less “ordinary” world?
Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:
· Share some of the barriers to growth and development.
Resources
· Bible
· Video: Lifespan Devotional Ordinary World 2
Background Information
Think of a time when you were certain the Holy Spirit was asking you to do something, something very different from the typical “being a good person.” Perhaps you were asked to donate a relatively large sum of money, to apologize to someone for a past wrongdoing, or to otherwise stretch yourself relationally, emotionally and even spiritually. How did you answer that type of calling? Were you willing and ready to obey? Did you shy away from the task?

2.2 Discussion: Positive Psychosocial and Cognitive Development
Getting Started
One emphasis of the psychology program at Indiana Wesleyan University is positive psychology. A central theme of positive psychology is encouraging human growth and development by enhancing flourishing and positive human functioning. While much research and emphasis have been on the application of positive psychology to adulthood, there is an increase in studies being conducted about the application of positive psychology to children and adolescents. You will learn about this application in more detail in this workshop.
Additionally, in this program, you have the opportunity to choose your specialization, “Life Coaching and Positive Psychology” and “Industrial and Organizational Psychology.” While positive psychology is a theme that runs through both specializations, there are two separate tracks to choose from for your specialization.
Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:
· Examine positive psychology and apply it to psychosocial and cognitive development.
· Explore how design thinking could be utilized in supporting psychosocial and cognitive development.

Background Information
In this discussion, you will explore the application of positive psychology to guide the flourishing of children in the middle childhood or adolescent stage. As you will learn, research does support the application of positive psychology in children to promote resilience, as well as to encourage protective mental health factors. These protective factors can lead to enhanced self-esteem and higher satisfaction with life, as well as improved academics, among other important things.
