Levels of Meaning

During the week, please observe how others communicate with you and/or how you communicate with others. Record at least three examples from among the following:

• Communicating Responsiveness
• Communicating lack of responsiveness
• Expressing liking
• Expressing disliking
• Expressing superiority
• Expressing subordination
• Expressing equality

For example:

This week my work team had a scenario with our boss, Margaret.  She expressed subordination when she boldly and loudly stated into a microphone, “We all need to have our work in at 5 p.m. this Friday.  No exceptions!”  Many people on the team like to take their time with their work, but Margaret won’t tolerate this.  Hence, Margaret reinforced to our team this week that she makes the rules.

In an essay, answer the following questions:

• What do your observations tell you about the relationship issues being negotiated and expressed in your relationships?
• How do your observations highlight concepts and vocabulary from the current module? Make sure to use citations when referencing these concepts.
