Instructions
This is a very important assignment. You are being asked to show what you have
discovered about the social and cultural contexts out of which your building
and/or landscape was produced. The following are just a few questions you can
ask to get started:
What were the cultural and philosophical ideas that were circulating at the
time?
Did this place reflect a particular national or local culture?
Was it a result of sacred or secular cultural values?
How does it reveal nuances of the culture that produced it?
What individuals or institutions had power in society?
How did the power of individuals or institutions affect the making of the
site?
How did it represent political figures or events?
Who was this place meant to accommodate?
Was the social hierarchy (or lack thereof) reflected in the architecture
and/or landscape?
Was it meant to have a certain effect on the local economy or culture?
How is the site a record of the cultural and political conditions of the time?
Write one full page on your findings. Do not be surprised if you have much more
than one page to write, but contain yourself to one page. Practice writing clearly
and include only the most important parts. You will be given the opportunity to
expand your writing later. Page two must list your Works Cited. Here is an MLA
