In the introduction section of The Fifth Discipline, Peter Senge (2006) and W. E. Deming have some provocative things to say about American business.  Dr. Deming is quoted “our prevailing system of management has destroyed our people” or “we will never transform the prevailing system of management without transforming our prevailing system of education” (p. xii). His list of eight basic elements of our prevailing system of management causes much thought.

Bill O’Brien is quoted as saying “People enter business as bright, well-educated, high-energy people full of energy and desire to make a difference”. “By the time they are 30, a few are on the fast track and the rest ‘put in their time’ to do what matters to them on the weekend” (In Senge, 2006, p. 7).

What do you think? In your experience, what have you observed?
