· (1)  A brief description of your idea:  What subject, event, or theme have you chosen to talk about to introduce yourself? Give a brief overview that summarizes your idea so that an audience can understand the basic elements. Who is involved, what you are doing, where/when the event takes place are good questions to answer here. Think of this part of your proposal as background info and context for your subject and presentation idea.

· (2)  A rationale : Why have you chosen your given subject? Why do you want to tell this story? What do you think it teaches us about you, your goals, interests, personality, ambitions, etc. What do you hope the audience takes from it? Why do you think it will make a good visual story?

Project Description A PechaKucka (Peh-cha' koo-cha') is a style of presentation that brings together images and public speaking. Created in 2003 by architects and designers in Tokyo, the goal was to give a platform to young artists and professionals to share and promote their work. The presentation style gives an opportunity to showcase image-based work from visual industries while still allowing time for verbal presentation. The format is traditionally “20x20,” or twenty slides appearing for twenty seconds each using auto-forward on slideshow software (such as PowerPoint or GoogleSlides). Project Requirements This PechaKucha presentation is designed to help you introduce yourself, your special interests, talents, goals, passions, and personality, to the class. The style of the presentation will help you organize your ideas and consider your delivery style in a professional public format. It will also begin to familiarize you with using visual aids powerfully in your presentations (images, in this case). In the interest of time, we will conduct 12x20 presentations, or 12 slides for 20 seconds each in an auto-advance slideshow format. This will give your speech a total running time of 4 minutes, and you will have a 10 second window before/after the 4-minute mark. The steps of the assignment are:

1. Choose a personal yet professional topic to present on and make sure it is  informative in nature (it tells us something about you AND the topic).  Your goal here is to talk about yourself through some specific aspect of your life (e.g., a sport, a hobby, a trip, a time period, a fascination -- but it must also be about you, not just the topic itself). Your images can be a mix of one's you have personally taken and/or those you find online (you must give credit for those, so keep track of them).

· Topic Ideas. In the past, students have chosen: high school band, a family/friend vacation, a social role like fatherhood/motherhood or coach, caring for pets/animals, career or academic milestones, a visual hobby (such as photography, a drawing portfolio, arts and crafts pieces, the influence of anime), a physical hobby (participating in a rec sports team, martial arts, backpacking/camping trips), the meaning behind tattoos; the list goes on, but your topic should be focused and organized and have a through-line or point for sharing it. Remember, we learn about you through another subject.

2. Select 12 images and arrange/order them in the best visual/spatial presentation that makes sense and helps you tell your story. Your organizational options include: chronological, spatial, topical, cause/effect, narrative arc.  You must also set each slide to auto-advance after 20 seconds. We will discuss these elements in more detail later. Also, please keep in mind that  the first slide should be a title slide, and  the last should be a conclusion slide. Leave room to give a little context background in the intro, and end smoothly with a clear conclusion and final thoughts.

3. Create a  verbal presentation for each slide. In other words, plan to explain the slide and/or why you chose to include it. Describe it; what is its significance? You are the tour guide for the image and its place in your story, so make sure your slides connect through a theme and tell a story together.

4. Present your slideshow and verbal presentation to our class audience as a recorded video file in a  professional/rehearsed manner by midnight Fri 10/3. You will also upload your script for your verbal presentation to a separate submission link.

5. Stay within the  4-minute timeframe

**Please note:  you may use notes to help you remember the verbal content and organization of your speech. However,  please do not read with a monotone or write out your entire presentation. Notes should act like a memory map – more like a GPS and less like an encyclopedia. Your aim is not to lose eye contact. We'll talk about tips to help you through this.

GRADING: You have options in terms of topic and arrangement of presentation that will be demonstrated through examples on Canvas. While the choices you make are up to you, your selections of editing and composition should fulfill the noted requirements above. Your grade will reflect your mastery, creativity and investment in your presentation. A rubric will be provided.
