journal 3.b prompt
Review the Expecting and Welcoming Resistance (p. 243) pertaining to building Trust. Explain this section in your own words. Next relate how this process of building trust is similar to what we discussed during our face-to-face class meeting on positional versus interest-based bargaining strategies in managing conflict. “Getting shot-down” and then “thanking them for it” is based in which conflict bargaining strategy? Why? Explain the role of vulnerability in building trust AND resolving conflict as a leader. Reflect on a personal/professional role model who was able to build trust in this manner and explain how their success unfolded. If you don’t have an example, target someone who felt short of this ideal process and explain what underlying factors (reasons) prevented them from welcoming resistance and successfully managing conflict. Finally, review Case 16.2 (p. 262-263) involving the four assistant VPs. If you had to say who represents you in their analysis of organizational conflict and solutions, are you Jessica, Brianna, Zachary, or Ruth? Outline the advantages and disadvantages of “who you are” in this case, and then reflect on whether you’d hope to move closer to another AVP’s style in order to compensate.
