A basic definition of IP telephony is telephone services that utilizes internet protocols for communications. Various types of media can be transferred using IP telephony rather than the strict requirements of traditional telephone systems. These include voice, data, video, and multimedia (“What is IP telephony”, 2016).

Even though IP telephony is rooted in internet protocol is important to understand that this does not inherently mean that the phone system will be linked to the open internet though this is a possibility (Nolte, 2011). Otherwise IP telephony can be carried out over private data networks should they company already have them or choose to develop one.

IP Telephony systems are shown to have numerous benefits over regular old telephone services. For example, IP telephony is dramatically more cost effective (Altura, 2017). There are also other non-monetary benefits such as easy scalability and mobility in terms of adding lines and working with new locations. (Altura, 2017). Additionally the ability of IP telephony to integrate with other services puts businesses in a position to better interact with customers, suppliers, etc. (Altura, 2017). Making the switch to IP telephony there are not a lot of start up costs because it is able to integrate with legacy systems as well transmit more than just voice (Altura, 2017)

Three IP telephony examples are FaceTime, magic jack, and WhatsApp. Facetime allows users to video chat over the internet and is proprietary to Apple, Inc. Magicjack allows users to set up a telephone using any current internet service. My cousin spent the semester abroad and we communicated via the WhatsApp rather than anyone getting international calling plans.
