Stress in dogs is described as feelings of strain or pressure; just like humans (Buzhardt, 2019).
Stress can elicit a flight or fight response.
Growling
Barking
Whining
Pacing
Freezing
Dogs use body language and warning signs to let humans know that they are stressed.
Symptoms Include:
Tucked ears/tail
Avoiding eye contact
Hiding
Panting
Shaking
(AKC, 2019)(Mood, 2019)
Inconsistent owner behavior
Confusing commands
Staring directly at the dog
Unnecessary punishment
Saying “it’s okay” before a stressful situation (word association)
It is important for owners to identify triggers and warning signs to help prevent future stress in their dog.
Examples of stressors:
(Mood, 2019) (AKC, 2019)
Reduced appetite
Aggressive or timid behavior
Separation Anxiety
Internal damage
Diarrhea
Chronic stress can lead to behavioral and physical changes in your dog such as:
(National Geographic, 2019)
(Wag, 2020)
Remove the dog from the stressor.
Provide your dog with a safe place in the home where they can escape anxious situations.
This quiet place can allow the dog space to regroup.
Don’t overly comfort the dog, as it will only confirm the fears are justified and may make the dog less confident in the future.
(Buzhardt, 2016) (AKC, 2019)
Exercise!
Physical activities such as walking or playing fetch can the owner you and the dog release tension (Buzhardt, 2016).
(AKC, 2019)
Use Routine Commands
Responding to routine commands distracts the dog and provides a sense of normalcy.
Commands such as sit, down, and heel can be calming to a worried dog.
Make the dog earn treats by performing a routing activity, i.e. sitting.
