Industry Research Assignment

150-point credit

Why I Made This Assignment

As we spoke about in class this week, deciding where to work and which job to take is so much more than just considering a salary. This assignment is to help you determine what you personally value when job searching, and what the most important factors are in your life when considering a new job opportunity.

1) Brainstorm and research at least 2 different industries you are interested in and 3 specific jobs within each industry that you think that you would enjoy and be successful in.

2) Write a sentence or two about each job telling me why you think that this would be a good choice for you and your life.

3) Once you have completed the assignment, fill in your name and section number at the top of this paper, select the “File” tab in Microsoft Word, click “Save As”, and then change the name of your document to “Your name. Sec #-Industry Research Assignment”

E.g.- “Jessica Gilstrap.002-Industry Research Assignment”

4) This assignment is due by 11:59 pm September via Canvas. You may turn this assignment in directly within this module or turn it in under the assignments tab.

Part 1: What do you value?

1) Location ( i.e.-Where do you want to live? State tax structure, close to family, business network?)

2) Financial Security ( i.e.-Do you value a steady paycheck or entrepreneurship opportunities more?)

3) Work Life Balance ( i.e.-What do you want to have time to do? Will you have time for hobbies, family, friends, trips? Do you want work from home/flexible schedule options?)

4) Company Culture ( i.e.-What do you value in a work environment? Quality of coworkers, company upholding their values, open, transparent, respectful environment?)

5) Opportunities for Advancement ( i.e.-Are you interested in opportunities for advancement? What are your goals? Do you want to have a supportive boss, company tuition reimbursement, a clear path to leadership?)

6) Intellectual Stimulation ( i.e.-Do you enjoy being challenged at work? To what degree? Do you want to constantly be learning or do you prefer routine and certainty?)

7) Desired Lifestyle ( i.e.-City life? Travelling? A quiet life in the suburbs? What is the estimated salary needed to support your ideal lifestyle?)

8) Company Benefits ( i.e.-Employer paid health insurance? 401 K matching? Discounted stock purchase options? Paid vacation and sick leave? etc.)

9) What are your passions in life? (i.e.-What motivates you to get out of bed every morning? Your family? Intrinsic motivations? A challenge? Awards? What makes you happy? etc.) There are no wrong answers here. This is all dependent upon you and what you personally value most and enjoy in life.

10) What natural abilities do you have? (i.e.-What comes easily to you? What talents would your friends and family say that you possess?)

11) Job Security (i.e.-Is your career one that you see becoming obsolete at some point in your lifetime? Do you anticipate an automated system may be able to replace you and your desired career some day?) This link may help you in your industry analysis:

Part 2: Industry Research and Job Possibilities

*For your research, I highly recommend using the U.S Bureau of Labor and Statistics. Recommended link: Home : Occupational Outlook Handbook: : U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (bls.gov) , I would also look at LinkedIn.com, Indeed.com, and even Google can help you get great information and ideas about different industries and job possibilities out there. Have fun with it and happy researching! *
