A. What is the standard?
The standard was developed for transmitting prescription information electronically between prescribers/providers, pharmacies, payers, and other entities for new prescriptions, changes of prescriptions, refill requests, fill status notifications, cancellation notifications, transactions for long-term care, relaying of medical history, electronic prior authorizations, and other transaction types (NCPDP, 2019).
B. What is the standard used for?
This standard is used for all pharmaceutical transactions between prescribers, pharmacies, and payers to ensure that all transactions and prescription interactions follow specific guidelines and standards set forth by the Government and other entities. E-prescribing is now part of this standard, which allows medications to be prescribed quickly, securely, and allows for additional checks to be in place to ensure safety of the medication and to make sure poly-pharmacy isn’t occurring (healthit.gov, 2019). Also, this standard allows for notifications for the patient. For instance, it allows the patient to be notified when a prescription is called in, when more refills are needed, when the prescription is ready, etc. (NCPDP, 2019). This allows the patient to be aware as to what is happening with their medications.
C. Why it is important?
This is an important standard for several reasons. This standard institutes guidelines for each party involved with prescribing, filling, and obtaining medications. Medications for a patient can be the difference between life and death. Ensuring that the patients are receiving the proper medication, these standards and approved vocabulary are important to ensure they are getting what the provider prescribes, get up to date information on what is going on with their prescriptions at their pharmacy, and ensure privacy and compliance with Government and other entity guidelines and restrictions as well. Through use of this standard, it theoretically should decrease the instances of medication errors (through any avenue) and allow for safe and accurate information being shared across the continuum of care of the patients.
