identity and diversity essay
- 1.use 3 Identities, I've had people use more and it makes the essay too clustered, so just focus on analyzing the 3
- 2.make sure to include opportunities, some essays I've read only focus on the barriers they've caused and forget to analyze the lessons they've learned because of it
- 3.be forward thinking, make sure you apply your identity to how it will affect your future, talking about your past is good to describe barriers but don't make your whole essay about the past
- 4.it's okay to not include a barrier, some identities (especially religion from what I've seen) are very hard for people to come up with a barrier for, as long as you explain clearly why you feel there isn't a barrier then it's okay to not include one
- 5.include 3-5 quotes, if you analyze a quote very well and integrate it into your argument then it's okay to use fewer quotes, but if you feel like you didn't expand enough on the quote or if it's just put in to mention a course topic then aim for 5, any more and you'll lose analysis in the paper
- 6."critical thinking" in the rubric means explaining and detailing your barriers and opportunities, some essays will say what the barriers and opportunities are but won't provide as much detail and will lose points in this section
- 7.pick identities that really matter to you, we all have many identities but some heavily outweigh the others, really try and think "What identity has really made me feel different from the people around me?"
