Situating the Real World Issues in Slumdog Millionaire in a Larger Historical Context

Overview

So far we have examined the marketing materials for the film and their ethos, pathos, and logos. We've also identified key social issues in the film and examined them. Now, we are going to examine those same social issues but in a larger context that extends beyond the film itself. This time you can discuss the film as just part of your essay and also bring in other texts or films that highlight that same social issue in similar, different, or even more complicated ways.

You should choose a social issue to work with for your documented essay. You must use the film Slumdog Millionaire in your analysis.

A documented essay is one in which you prove what you argue with secondary research sources. In this module, we will discuss what makes a source scholarly and what makes a source credible. Now, you will put it to good use.

Analyze the film's portrayal of the US and American's ideals. How are they portrayed? What are the consequences of these ideas on specific social issues like child welfare, child labor, and poverty, for example. To what extent is the film supporting American's ideals and ways of dealing with these social issues? In what ways, if any, does the film complicate or challenge these American ideals? Be sure to use present day facts and statistics about these social issues in India and the U.S. and explore attitudes about these issues in each country and how they shape expectations both at home and abroad.
