week1soc.paperintr..pdf

Most of these weekly papers will contain five to eight paragraphs.

Single-spaced, 12 pt. font, no big margins, number your paragraphs 1,2,3,4, 5.

Just include the numbers, not my instructions or questions.

Please include at least TWO textbook page numbers or other source per response as an in-text citation, like (Kendall, 11).

Use paraphrasing, summarizing, explaining. Do not use quotes, except a short one here and there.

(Paragraphs 1 and 2) Choose two key points from Chapter 1 and write one paragraph (about 180 words each ) on each key point. Key points can be determined by you as you read or view a video, and something catches your interest, or at the end of the chapter there is a list of key terms, or you can choose section headings in the chapter.

Paragraph 3, 180 words) How can the various sociological perspectives be applied to explaining suicide? (Explain the three main perspectives of functionalist, conflict and symbolic-interactionist. How might these perspectives interact to explain suicide? Do you find one perspective especially persuasive?

Paragraph 4, 180 words) Compare and contrast the research methods that sociologists use to analyze society. What kinds of research topics are most appropriate to which method?

Paragraph 5, 180 words) Watch the trailer of the documentary "Tough Guise" and answer the following questions:

a) How does Jackson Katz show that men's behaviors are socially constructed (this concept is discussed in Chapter 1) and socially learned?

b) How does the Media, a key social institution, shape how we perceive men in American society?

c) One of Katz's central arguments is that our society creates violence so that it is a normative expectation rather than an act of deviance or a social abnormality. Do you agree or disagree, and why?
