 JOURNAL PROMPTS FOR “READ WINDOW”

[REMEMBER: THESE ARE ONLY TO HELP YOU FINISH YOUR ENTRY. YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO THEM ALL OR ANY OF THEM IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING BETTER!!!]

We talked about Voyeurism in class and how L.B. Jeffries is stuck in his room and begins to spy on his neighbors. We talked about how you, as someone watching any movie, are ALSO a voyeur, spying on other people's stories. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? What does this have to do with ANY form of entertainment? Like reading a book?

We are all trapped inside our own heads, trying to understand what's inside other people's heads. Do we make up stories to try to understand? What do you think? [Look up the word “SOLIPSISM” and CONSIDER how everything we know about the rest of the world comes to us thru our senses and then thru other media, like TV, internet, cellphones, etc. How do we REALLY know what's OUT THERE?]

Someone said REAR WINDOW is really a ROMANCE story disguised as a MURDER story. What does that mean? How many romantic situations can you count taking place during the movie? [YOU MIGHT HAVE TO WATCH IT AGAIN TO SEE!]

What has changed, if anything, about how MEN and WOMEN look at relationships, like MARRIAGE, since this movie was made in 1954? What ASSUMPTIONS are being made for us the viewers in this movie?

Why does L.B. Jeffries keep putting off a relationship with Lisa Fremont? Is it because she's a WOMAN or is it because he thinks she's too GOOD for him? Is it because she comes from UPPER CLASS SOCIETY? Does he think she is too WEAK to be in the kind of rough-and-tumble life he pursues?
