For this activity, pretend you cannot speak for a total of at least two hours. During this time, you must communicate only through nonverbal methods such as gestures, facial expressions, writing notes, pictures, signs, body movement, or technology.

You do not have to complete the two hours all at once — you may break it into shorter segments if needed.

Try to place yourself in situations where other people are required to communicate with you nonverbally (for example: at home, at a restaurant, in class, with friends, etc.).

In your discussion post, be sure to address:

  • What nonverbal strategies you used to communicate your needs, feelings, and thoughts
  • Which nonverbal communication theories or concepts you applied (e.g., kinesics, proxemics, facial expressions, eye contact, paralanguage absence, etc.)
  • How effective your communication was without speech
  • The reactions of the people you interacted with afterward
    • Did they become frustrated?
    • Did they pressure you to talk?
    • Did they adapt to your nonverbal style?
