Hypothesis Testing (One Sample/Proportions)
WK 6 SOCI332
Excel Directions:
- State your null and alternative hypotheses in text.
- Use Data → Data Analysis → t-Test: Two-Sample Assuming Equal Variances (or appropriate variant) if Analysis ToolPak is enabled. Or use built-in functions:
- =T.TEST(range1, range2, tails, type)
- For one-sample: compute t = (mean – μ₀) / (stdev / SQRT(n)).
- Use =T.DIST.2T(|t|, df) or =T.DIST.RT(|t|, df) for p-value (two-tail or right-tail).
- Compare p-value to α. Make decision.
- Report test statistic, degrees of freedom, p-value in Excel, and interpretation in a write-up.
- Use cell references for all calculations.
