MINI-FIELDWORK ACTIVITY: Romance and Marriage over Time
For the Discussion, you are going to engage in a mini-fieldwork activity by doing research about cultural changes in romance over time.
Part 1: Your thoughts
Write down your answers to the following questions. What does a person in your culture do when they want to become romantically involved with a particular someone? Are there common practices for this? What are the different roles of the two people involved? Are there courtship symbols and rituals? Is there some amount of disagreement in your culture about any of these activities?
Part 2: Elder's thoughts
Now, find a person in your culture who is much older than you, perhaps a person over 70 years old. Ask that person to describe how people did the same things when they were your age. Ask them the same set of questions from Part 1, and write down their answers.
Part 3: Your reflections
Write down your answers to the following questions. Reflecting on your answers and the elder's answers, how have romantic relations changed over time? What forces have shaped this change? What aspects have remained the same? What explains the durability of some practices? Based on this trajectory of change, can you predict how romantic relations will change in the future?
Part 4: Your Discussion Post
Summarize Parts 1, 2, & 3 in approximately 250 words ensuring that your thoughts, the elder's thoughts, and your reflections are succinctly but thoroughly provided. Please see the Rubric below for more details. Post on the Discussion
