There is a great deal of research on the East versus West attempting to explain the variety of cultural differences that make up a person’s identity. These studies show variations in communication, expression, perception, and conflict avoidance among individuals from cultures from one orientation versus the other (Matsumoto & Juang, 2017). Consider your own identity. Would you be the same person if you were raised in a culture that valued the group over the individual (collectivistic culture) or valued independence and the development of the self (individualistic culture)? How does your culture impact your identity?
As your final Assignment, you will reflect on Eastern versus Western approaches to various psychological concepts and decide where you fall on the spectrum. You will then consider how these facets of your identity may affect your life, personally and professionally, as well as your perspective on social change.
