DSM-5 TR: Cultural Syndromes and Cultural Idioms of Distress
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or DSM, is the primary diagnostic resource used by health professionals to evaluate, diagnose, and treat psychological disorders. The following two sections from the book include discussions of how to integrate culture and social context into mental health diagnoses. This includes how individuals from different cultures express illness and distress and examples of cultural syndromes that overlap with DSM disorders. In addition, explore other sections of the DSM-5 TR to familiarize yourself with the various psychological disorders and their diagnostic criteria.

Recall the definition of culture from earlier in the course: a set of attitudes, behaviors, and symbols shared by a large group of people (Shiraev & Levy, 2024, p. 9). Organizations, too, can represent a group of people with a shared culture. For this Assignment, you will apply a cross-cultural psychology lens to analyze the culture at a workplace or for a group of your choosing. Some important concepts to consider when studying organizational culture include the organization’s values, power structures and dynamics, flexibility or rigidity, behavioral norms, conformity, and attributional styles. These can be influenced by the overall societal culture in which the organization exists, as well as arise from cross- cultural interactions among members, and individual personality characteristics and styles.
As you continue your progress in this course, you will see that your scholarly writing works hand-in-hand with how you understand and analyze the content of what you are learning. For this Assignment, you will continue to work on your scholarly skills as you develop your understanding of cross-cultural psychology.
