Working Title: The Rise of Christianity

Theme: The social, political, and cultural changes that directly caused the rise of Christianity.

Working Thesis: The rise of Christianity in Western Afro-Eurasia was influenced by various

factors, including political and social changes, cultural interactions, and the appeal of Christian

teachings, which ultimately transformed the religious and cultural landscape of the region.

Description of Conversion of Constantine (372):

This is a painting depicting the conversion of the Roman Emperor Constantine to Christianity.

Because the Roman Empire still had claim over much of the region, having its leader be a

professed believer of the Christian faith helped to further spread it throughout the empire and

stop the persecution of those in the empire that were already practicing the Christian faith.

Description of Recovery of the Cross of Christ by Helena (c. 325 CE), from Ecclesiastical

History (fifth century CE), Socrates (410):

This is a text from Socrates that tells the story of how Helena, the mother of Constantine, found

the cross Jesus was crucified on and further describes how Christianity was spread to Africa

and India during the reign of Constantine. This directly relates to my topic because it discusses

the social changes that occurred in Europe regarding the rise of Christianity and how it was

spread to other parts of the world in its infancy.

Description of Mosaics of Christian Martyrdom (372):

These are pictures of mosaics that were found in modern-day Israel and Northern Africa that

depict how Christians were treated before Christianity was legalized by Constantine. This

relates to my topic because the martyrdom of important figures in early Christianity helped it to

spread throughout this part of the world. Giving the Christian movement charismatic figures

helped it gain popularity among all people regardless of social status.

Initial Thoughts on Global Literacy:

Christianity is still one of the most popular religions in the world today so understanding its

origins and impact on society at the time it first started will help me to understand the impact it

has on society today.

Reflection:

I feel that I have enough material to write a 3-4 page paper. Additional examples would be nice

so I can add more content but I will be able to write the entire paper with the provided material.
