This essay is about African Americans in the United States MILITARY and the history should focus on the military service of the units, regiments and people. The essay is due Friday by 11:59 pm ET and your 2 peer responses are due Sunday by 11:59 p.m. ET. Post your essay as early as possible so students have time to respond. They are both graded with the essay grading rubric. Therefore, do not use your textbook or an encyclopedia. Research in the library or from the course bibliography. You use at least one academic source. You may research on the internet, but if you do, you must use credible sources only (Wikipedia, About.com, blogs etc are not credible sources, for example). Remember that this is a formal essay and you need an introduction (with a thesis statement), body, and conclusion paragraphs. You must also use at least one academic source and you must respond to a minimum of two classmates. Because students must respond, please post your essay as soon as possible.

1. What effect did the World War II wartime experience have on African Americans? Did their experiences help or hinder the progress toward equality in America? How were they treated during World War II? Did the government take any steps to ease discrimination against African Americans in war industries?

2. How did the war change African American attitudes toward their status in American society? How did it change their aspirations?

3. How did the rhetoric of World War II bring the contradiction between the principle of equal freedom and the actual status of Black people to the forefront of national life? Regarding the war, one Black woman said that it was Hitler who got Black people out of the white folks' kitchen. How did they "move out of the kitchen," and what forces were behind those achievements?

4. How did the Double V campaign spark a civil rights movement? How successful was the Double V campaign?

5. Did World War II redraw the boundaries of American citizenship? Compare the experiences of Black people during World War I and World War II.

6. Franklin D. Roosevelt said that to be an American has always been a "matter of mind and heart," and "never... a matter of race or ancestry." Was this true for African Americans? How did the language of freedom and democracy help open doors of opportunity for African Americans? What obstacles remained for full success?

7. Eric Foner wrote, "The language with which World War II was fought helped to lay the foundation for postwar ideals of human rights that extend to all mankind." Do you agree with this statement as it pertains to African Americans? For African Americans, during World War II and the postwar era, what freedoms were extended or contracted?

1. Taking into consideration the history you have learned this term, why is poverty so persistent among African Americans?

2. Think about hip-hop culture and how it has gone mainstream. What is its importance for Black culture, and how is it another example of sports and the arts breaking down racial barriers? Why is it in sports and the arts that this happens and not in, for example, science or religion?

3. Examine why the civil rights movement stalled by the mid-1970s. By the end of the 1980s, how successful had it been? Were the desired freedoms won? What methods had it employed to best effect? Which strategies were most effective, and why? How did activism change? By 2005, what changes had taken place for African Americans? In this analysis, remember that African Americans are not a monolithic bloc. What divisions existed within the African American community by 2005?

4. Examine in the 1980s and, later, the entry of African Americans into Congress. Did it change the face of government? Did it change anything more substantially?

5. Analyze the problem of "driving while Black" and the incarceration of African Americans.

6. How did Ronald Reagan's presidency change the economic reality for African Americans?

The initial post with well-referenced facts is due by Friday, 11:55 p.m. ET and 2 peer responses are due by Sunday, 11:55 p.m. ET. Do not research on the Internet. In this discussion I want you to provide me with your concluding thoughts about the topics you learned during the course. I do not want you to focus on all that you learned, but two clear topics (narrow ones, not something vague like civil rights) that you found of interest. You must include information that we discussed in our 8 weeks together, in our discussions, and  not something we didn't we didn't specifically talk about in our discussions in this  exact class. 

In order to earn full points, you need to be specific about two topics that you learned about and put them in context. That means, show that you " get" why those topics are important, what happened before, after, etc. Do not hunt and peck for information, but put it in context. Show mastery of those two narrow topics (for example, "civil rights" is not a topic, it is too broad, something like Jim Crow is too broad, as well). The topics you choose must have been discussed in this course, in our discussions and 8 weeks together. You need clear paragraphs, an intro, and a conclusion. I expect a few paragraphs.
