1. Ulysses S Grant, who led Union armies to victory in the Civil War, explicitly stated that “The Southern rebellion was largely the outgrowth of the Mexican war. Nations, like individuals, are punished for their transgressions. We got our punishment in the most sanguinary and expensive war of modern times.” What did he mean by this? In what ways did the Mexican War and the subsequent debates over western expansion make the Civil War inevitable?
2. Why did western expansion, or “Manifest Destiny”, become a major political issue during the 1840s? What role did industrialization, immigration, and the expansion of slavery following the war of 1812 contribute to this phenomenon?
3. Why did the North win the Civil War? Why did the South lose?
