3.8 Adding rhetorical elements to our body paragraphs
|
Directions: |
You are well on your way to writing impactful academic argument essays. In this step of the refining process, revisit rhetorical strategies, and add or enhance your use of rhetoric to your essay.
Remember, Rhetorical devices are linguistic tools that use sentence structure, sound, or meaning patterns to evoke a specific response from an audience. They can be used to construct an argument or make an existing argument more compelling. To identify rhetorical devices in an argumentative essay, you can ask yourself questions about the author's purpose, tone, and evidence: Purpose What is the author's purpose? Are they focusing on key claims or discussing multiple topics?
Tone What tone is the author using? Are they trying to evoke sympathy or anger? Are they writing from a personal perspective or as an authority?
Evidence What kinds of evidence are presented? Are the claims the writer is making valid or problematic? Is the evidence convincing?
For this assignment, submit:
1. A body paragraph that has been intentionally revised to add or enhance the use of rhetorical strategies.
2. A 3-5 sentence explanation of how you used rhetorical strategies to enhance your body paragraph including an explanation of how you think these changes will impact the reader.
3. This assignment should be in APA format, so it should have a cover page, reference page, and correct internal APA citations.
Grading: This assignment will be graded for completion, and you will receive full credit if you fully complete each of the three elements. Additionally, you will receive feedback on your use of rhetorical devices.
