Drama Project Rough Draft
Details
Overview:
For this project, you will have two components:
1. A creative component that represents some aspect of one of the play-
Examples-
· A CD cover you make that has artwork and lists five or six songs related to a theme, tone, or other elements from the play (You will have to upload the CD cover by taking a picture when you are finished or design it or uploading a file (pdf, .doc, or .docx). It must be in a format I can open.
· A mock-quilt that has images to represent symbolism (Again, you will need photographs)
· A Prezi or PowerPoint that explores one of the elements from the play (symbol, theme, one specific character’s development….)
· A poster you design based on the key focus of your reflection paper.
2. A short 500 word response that explores the elements you chose to use in your creative portion, why and how you chose it, and why it is significant to the time it was performed. Moreover, you should have textual evidence and explain the connection to your choice and the significance of the passage. You should use MLA format and have an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusions. You can explore character, theme, setting… You can use one of the discussion questions either on discussion board or from the text book as a spring board if you like.
Your reflection will be graded on clarity in your response, the evidence you provide for your choices, and your explanation.
Your creative component will be graded on creativity, organization, and a clear connection to the play.

Poetry Project
Overview:
As we have been discussing in class, the individual word choice makes it necessary to explicate, or examine, each word. This is exactly what you will be doing for this project.
For this project, you will explicate and analyze one of the poems we have covered in class. If there is one we did not cover that you are interested in, please see me. You might focus on one poetic device or even two or three that go hand-in-hand, depending on the poem’s length. Go back to your notes on the poetic devices to incorporate the terms connected with that device.
As an alternative, you may pick one poetic device to compare/contrast two poems. To go beyond meeting the assignment, you will want to make connections most might not notice.
Your essay will be 750-900 words, double spaced, Times New Roman, and twelve point font. Please use MLA format. Also, you will want a Works Cited page to cite the poem(s).You may use an outside source and quote from it as support, but this is not required. Your last project will though of the semester will though.
Audience:
Your audience are future ENGL 102 students who would read your piece as a sample in the anthology as a student model.
The purpose of this project is to put to practice what we have been doing in class. Moreover, the project meets the student learning outcomes of you being able to:
A. analyze and discuss works of fiction;
B. use appropriate literary terms to discuss a selection (ex. sound, repetition, rhyme, imagery, symbol…)
C. write critical essays using patterns of development introduced and practiced in English 101
Helpful Hints:
Consider the following as you write your explication and prepare for your recitation-
1. What poetic devices are working hand-in-hand in this poem? (ex. sound, repetition, rhyme, imagery, symbol…)
2. Are there connections to other poems or works we have covered thus far? Consider this as you explicate the poem.
3. Read the poem numerous times.
4. Annotate each line and stanza to see how the elements are working together. (Write beside each stanza what words stand out and why. You can also summarize what is going on.)

ENGL 102-106

Title
Poetry has a unique style that no other writing has or shows. The authors behind a piece of poetry dig deep and really make the work come alive to the audience. Poetry uses sounds like rhythm and images to convey the main ideas and feelings. Those are part of the five senses which makes poetry focus mainly on the figurative language imagery. Edgar Allan Poe and Comment by Joy Smith: Hook that sets poetry’s uniqueness Comment by Joy Smith: Clear lead into the topic Comment by Joy Smith: Introduces a focus area Comment by Joy Smith: Introduce poets and poem titles.
Robert Frost are poets that compose works with this style. Both of their works “The Raven” by Poe and “Acquainted with the Night” by Frost use imagery to make the reader perceive what the character is going through and to set the mood, gothic elements to generate an overall idea of sorrow, yet Poe centers the attention of the reader on the narrator mourning while Frost focuses on isolation and loneliness. Comment by Joy Smith: Maybe choose a couple of figurative language elements to focus on instead of mixing many topics. Comment by Joy Smith: Thesis However, it could be clearer by focusing on one area. Comment by Joy Smith: speaker For poetry, use “speaker” instead of “narrator.”
Within Poe’s “The Raven” and Frost’s “Acquainted with the Night” they use imagery to really place the reader into that situation. The poets use every word precisely to create this image inside the readers mind leading them to feel, see, and think in that mood. In “The Raven” it states, “and each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor” (Poe 1155). Thus, making the audience feel how sad and depressing the mood is in the room with this old man. In “Acquainted with the Night” it is said, “I have outwalked the furthest city light.” (Frost 952). The way the author worded this leads the reader to see that it is dark without any light and that this person, the narrator, is out walking. Together these poems both show darkness because one shows fire going out and the other talks about passing the streetlights. Comment by Joy Smith: Clear topic sentence Comment by Joy Smith: In “The Raven,” the speaker declares, “and…” ( Poe 15). Comment by Joy Smith: Note, use the line number, not page number. I inserted just an example one. Comment by Joy Smith: the speaker explains,
Gothic elements are key components in these two authors works. They are used to add fear, suspense, sorrow, sadness, and so forth into the texts. In these two poems both authors chose to use the gothic element of sorrow. Sorrow is the feeling of deep distress caused by a loss or disappointment that one, themself, must go through. “The Raven” shows this because Poe wrote “From my books surcease of sorrow --- sorrow for the loss Lenore” (Poe 1155). The narrator here has lost his wife and now must cope with it alone. His mind is trying to help him face the pain so it would not be with him for the rest of his days. In “Acquainted with the Night” the author uses this element of sorrow by writing on an exploration of it. It is stated in the story, “I have looked down the saddest city lane.” (Frost 952). This displays the element of sorrow because the narrator is looking back and remembers the time that has caused them to be in this situation. They are walking around in the dark alone reminiscing. Comment by Joy Smith: authors’ Comment by Joy Smith: authors’ Comment by Joy Smith: This does not clarify what it adds and is not needed. Comment by Joy Smith: This is rather vague. You only need the couple of examples. Comment by Joy Smith: The speaker cries out, “Quote” Comment by Joy Smith: Use line numbers for poetry. Comment by Joy Smith: Use a transition to move from one poem to the other. Comment by Joy Smith: No period is needed here. Comment by Joy Smith: Comment by Joy Smith: because each speaker…
When writing “The Raven” Poe centered all his attention on the mourning of the narrator’s wife’s death. Everything that is occurring is happening because of his personal loss. Losing his wife made him suffer from a severe depression that leads him to having a conversation with a bird. As he speaks with the bird, he slowly comes to the realization of what is really happening. He finally sees that Lenore is gone and that they will not be reunited ever again. This is shown within the story because it states, “Clasp a rare and radiant maiden whom the angles named Lenore ---- Quoth the raven, Nevermore.” (Poe 1157). This meaning that the raven answers all his answers but just not with the answer that the narrator wanted. With that being said, Poe focused on nothing but the narrator trying to grieve and get over the loss of his wife, Lenore. Comment by Joy Smith: A clearer topic sentence is needed. Comment by Joy Smith: the speaker exclaims, Comment by Joy Smith: angels Comment by Joy Smith: … Comment by Joy Smith: No period is needed. Also use the line number instead of page number. Comment by Joy Smith: Use the line number
Frost’s main reason in writing “Acquainted with the Night” was to show the isolation and loneliness within this character. He uses night as an example of how dark and sad the work really is. Nighttime is filled with darkness, lonesomeness, abandonment, and sadness. The narrator is by himself walking the roads at night. Frost shows this by writing, “I have been one acquainted with the night.” (Frost 952). All that he is saying here is that this narrator filled with so many emotions that it is unescapable like the night. Comment by Joy Smith: Transition is needed to guide the reader.
Both authors have a specific way of writing but sometimes their styles can have similar aspects. Poe and Frost are the two authors/poets that I felt wrote in a way that was the most similar especially with these two works, “The Raven” and “Acquainted with the Night”. The gothic element of sorrow was felt by the reader of both pieces because it was shown so conspicuously. Also, both authors used a lot of imagery to create that image inside of the readers head to really place them in the story. They really wanted to make the reader imagine what these narrators were going through and they did just that. Even though they had their similarities, Poe concentrated on his character mourning on a death while Frost aimed his thought on his character being lonely and dark. Therefore, authors can write the same, use the same aspects, and all of that nature, but the meaning can be totally different.
