Week 8 Discussion: Generating (MORE) Material for Your Critical Essay
Discussions play an integral role in monitoring your course participation and supporting your learning throughout the term. You should check back to the weekly discussion forum multiple times throughout the week to engage with your professor and peers. While you may make your initial post within the late policy guidelines, response posts with peers are only counted during the week in which the discussion is assigned. For full credit, answer the prompt question(s) thoroughly using a minimum of 150 words, and respond to as many of your peers as possible throughout the week. Note that two response posts to your peers are required for full credit; each must be a minimum of 75 words. Your initial post is due by Day 3 of the week in which it is assigned, and follow-up posts to your peers are due on Day 7. If your posts include research, be sure to appropriately cite any sources used with standard APA citations.
This discussion is meant to allow you to generate material for your Critical Essay (this is Step 4 of 6 for your Critical Essay). Because of that, unlike other discussions, your instructor will not assess grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
You have previously summarized your two sources. Now:
In your initial post explain to your fellow students
1) On what important points the two sources agree
2) and on what point(s) your experience of the topic has matched up with or not matched up with these important point(s).
In your responses to classmates, comment on
1) how interesting or compelling your classmate’s post is and why
2) and what they might consider as they revise.
( HINT: This will become the draft of your synthesis paragraph (third body paragraph), the one that follows the second summary.
You will probably want to copy the material from your initial post into Assignment 9 (Template) - Critical Essay Rough Draft

Assignment 9: Critical Essay Rough Draft
Critical Essay Rough Draft (Step 5 of 6 for your Critical Essay assignment)
You will use a template for this assignment, which has everything you need for proper APA formatting.
Download this template Download Download this template to complete your work and submit it for this week’s assignment.
This week you will be working on your “shitty first draft” of the Critical Essay using the template provided, which has the APA format for you. You will work on parts of three stages in the GORP writing process this week: Generating, Organizing, and Revising.
Before you submit your rough draft, check that the following parts of your essay are present:
|
The Introduction: |
Using the knowledge you have gained through working with the two provided sources and the discussion on why your topic is important, introduce the topic to your readers. Provide your readers with background information and importance, and end with a thesis or purpose statement that states the topic you will explore and the resources you will use. Don’t forget, you began generating work for this in the Generating Material for Your Critical Essay Discussion Board |
|
Body Paragraph 1: |
This is the first summary you completed. Use the instructor feedback to revise and paste that in. |
|
Body Paragraph 2: |
This is the second summary you completed. Use the instructor feedback to revise and paste that in. |
|
Body Paragraph 3 (Connection/Reflection): |
You will still need to generate the material for this paragraph. Begin the paragraph by following this template for the first two sentences of the paragraph: · <Author 1> (Year) and <Author 2> (Year) verb (claim, suggest, imply, argue, or similarly strong verb) <your synthesis of their articles>. My experiences match up with/do not match up with their noun (claim, suggestion, implication, argument, or similar noun) because <reasoning based on your experience> You will need to use in-text citations. See the lecture on how to do that. The source’s ideas and your experiences may converge or diverge. In the rest of the paragraph, discuss whether your experience do or not match up with the claims of your sources. Provide illustrations from your experience to support your point. |
|
The Conclusion: |
You will still need to generate the material for this paragraph. The final paragraph will tell your readers what they should take away from your essay. This paragraph will illustrate the significance of the issue, showing your readers why this topic matters. End with a call to action. In other words, tell the reader what you recommend they do with the knowledge you have given them. |
|
Format: |
Your template provides the proper APA format, but you will need to supply the references (which have been provided in the lectures and assignments). You will also need to add information on the title page. Check that your Critical Essay is formatted properly using APA (hint: use the provided template in Canvas). This includes: · A title page has all the information needed in the correct formatting. · APA formatting is correct (double-spaced, Times New Roman 12-point font, indented paragraphs, page numbers). · You have provided in-text citations when needed. · Your References page lists full references for your two provided sources (in alphabetical order, double-spaced, with a hanging indent on the second and each additional line of each source). |
Remember, this assignment is only a first rough draft. While it is important to generate and revise each required paragraph, it is fine to approach the new content (part of the introduction, body paragraph 3, and the conclusion) as freewriting (part of the generating step in GORP). Your instructor and the next lecture will provide the feedback and information you need to take this paper to its final form.
