Process Essay

100pts Description: You will write a process essay using a topic of your choice that is related to your

current job or your future career. The purpose of the Process Essay is to gain proficiency in the

principles of informing, clarifying and explaining a specific subject matter while employing

MLA documentation. You will write about the process of a skill or activity that you are very

familiar with on your job or will need to become familiar with in your future career. Assume

your audience knows little about your topic. Your purpose is to instruct or inform. Think about

something you do on a regular basis as part of your job, or something you are learning about in

your program coursework. You may use multiple strategies to support your explanation, such as

definition, description, or narration. Your design is a multi-paragraph essay, including an

introduction with a hook and thesis statement, several body paragraphs with transitional topic

sentences, and a conclusion that answers the "so what?" question. You may include images, lists,

numbered steps, or figures in your text. You will need to do some research on your topic in order

to learn more about it. When you do, follow MLA guidelines to give credit to your sources.

Format:

 Correct MLA Heading

 2-3 pages

 Size 12 font

 Times New Roman font

 Double Spaced

 Title (centered and capitalized correctly)

 At least 3 sources of information

 Works Cited Page

 Correct MLA, in-text citation when quotes are used

As you plan and construct your essay, be sure to do the following:

 Introduction: Write a thesis statement which clearly identifies the topic and your point

about the topic. Identify qualified sub-points.

 Body: Develop your thesis through qualified sub-points. Discuss the steps in

chronological order. Show critical analysis, rather than just reporting of facts in a book-

report type of style.

 Include a concluding paragraph that sums up your points and any additional tips that

you would like to share.

 Organize your paper in a way that leads your reader through every step needed in order

to perform or understand this skill/activity successfully. Choose a specific activity or

information that can be explained in a series of steps. Use elements of Process Analysis

as discussed in the lectures notes and videos.

 Use complete sentences – i.e. do not just list the steps, but explain them. Study the notes

on sentence structure.

 Use correct MLA Format and Citation: If you cite sources, include a Works Cited

page for those sources.

 Since you are giving steps or information that will always work, write your paragraphs in

present tense.

 Use transition words, phrases, and sentences to make the steps for each paragraph clear.
