Author’s Notes: optional
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of Impact Therapy (IP) on a group of women who suffer from low self-esteem due to negative body image. Developed by Dr. Ed Jacobs at the University of West Virginia, IP is a form of that utilizes visual images to re-create neuro-pathways in an effort to change how a person thinks about a problem, Jacobs, (2013) For this study, 20 women enrolled at a small regional university in the South, volunteered for a 12-week self-esteem group. The participants were between the ages of 19 and 34 with half of the women being Caucasian and half African American. The methods used were a variety of visual aids presented to the participants regarding an identified negative thought regarding body image. Participants were asked to reflect on the process after each visual aid was presented. Data were collected using Body Image Perception Scale (BIPS) both pre and post-test group experience and the Self-Esteem Rating Scale (SERS), Citation required, (1900). The results of the study showed that after 12-weeks of participation, improvements were found in increase self-esteem and a more positive body image perception. The limitations of this study is that the group consisted of women with poor body image due to obesity. Future studies should focus on how this approach can be used with others including those with eating disorders, males, and persons with disabilities as well as people from other cultures.

(NOTE: This is where you begin the summary of your article. Begin with the title being centered but not boldface. Do not insert introduction or summary as the heading. The title serves as that notation)
Summarize the important components of the article, including what the authors of the study identify as limitations and suggested recommendation for future research. The summary should be at least one page.
Critique
From the article Discuss the group dynamics and group processes you identify.
Group dynamics are the processes that occur between members of a group. These processes are complex, cyclical, reciprocal, and often occur simultaneously. There are several important factors which impact group dynamics, such as group member power, roles, and coalitions.
Group dynamics refers to the attitude and interaction of group members and leaders.
Describes the interaction and energy exchange between members and between members and leaders. Group dynamics is also used to describe the forces that are operating in a group. These forces may be obvious or hidden they include such things as how members talk to each other, how members feel about each other, how members feel about the leader, and how the leader reacts to the members. The important thing for the leader to realize is that when leading a group there are things to attend to other than just the verbal exchange among members.
Group Process refers to the stages of a group.
Stage 1: Pre-group issues: Formation of the Group
Stage 2: Initial Stage: Orientation and Exploration
Stage 3: Transition Stage: Dealing with Reluctance
Stage 4: Working Stage: Cohesion and Productivity
Stage 5: Final Stage: Consolidation and Termination
Stage 6: Post group Issues: Evaluation and Follow-up
Once you identify a stage, answer these questions:
What are the characteristics of this stage of group development?
What are member functions and Possible problems? (You might need to go to the text book for this information)
What are the therapeutic factors and how they contribute to group effectiveness?
Every group process has what Yalom has identified as curative. He identified the following that exist in successful group work:
· Instillation of Hope.
· Universality.
· Imparting Information
· Altruism.
· Corrective Recapitulation of the Primary Family Group.
· Development of Socializing Techniques.
· Interpersonal Learning.
· Imitative behavior
· Group Cohesiveness.
· Catharsis
· Existential factors i.e such as one is alone and responsible
Do not just simply list what I have here. Show me your critical thought and what factors are present in your article
Characteristics and functions of effective group leaders
Describe the functions of the group leader and identify the characteristics that effective group leaders would demonstrate.
Again, you may need to use your book to complete this section.
Benefits to new counselors
How is this work useful to you as an aspiring counselor? Do not use first or second person in APA. Write your reflections in third person. Start with what you knew about the approach before reading the article and what new insight or knowledge did you gain from this assignment. I understand that it will be difficult to talk about yourself in third person, but APA is a very formal form of writing and has some rules about grammar that should be followed. NO WORRIES!! I do not count of points for this error; however, I do note that on the rubric for your feedback.
Contributions to the field of counseling
How do you think this work contributes to the field of counseling? Remember to use only third person but talk about how this approach or technique will contribute to group counseling, where could this approach be used, does this approach require additional training etc.
Future Research
Expand from the author’s suggested recommendations for new research and mention how that would benefit new counselors and contribute to the field of counseling.
Limitations
Using the limitations cited by the authors of the study, expand on these limitations by suggesting how to address these limitations. Use your imagination and money is no object.
Conclusion
Every great paper has a good conclusion.
