Your essay must cover the historical origins, constitutional framework, evolution over time, and modern-day relevance of the principle. It should be supported by credible sources, properly cited in MLA format.
Below you will find a breakdown of the grading rubric and what is expected in this rough draft.
Introduction
· Hook: A brief anecdote, question, or fact to grab attention
· Context: Briefly explain the role of foundational principles in American government
· Thesis: A clear and specific statement of what your essay will argue or explain about your chosen principle
Historical Origins
· Explain where this principle came from:
· What political philosophers or movements influenced it (e.g., Locke, Montesquieu, Enlightenment ideas)?
· How did it emerge in American thought (Colonial period, Constitutional Convention, etc.)?
Constitutional Framework
· Identify how this principle is embedded in the U.S. Constitution:
· Cite specific Articles, Amendments, and/or Federalist Papers.
· Explain how the language of the Constitution reflects this principle.
· Show how the Framers intended to protect or implement it.
Evolution Over Time
· Describe how the interpretation or application of this principle has changed over time.
· Include at least two well-explained Supreme Court cases or major historical events.

· Explain how these events shaped our modern understanding of the principle.
Contemporary Relevance

· Use at least one current or recent event as a case study.

· Make a strong, clear argument for its importance in modern democracy.
Use of Sources & MLA Format
· Use at least 3 credible sources (academic articles, government websites, books, etc.).
· Include MLA in-text citations and a Works Cited page.
· Ensure correct formatting throughout.
Organization & Clarity
· Organize your essay clearly using paragraphs and transitions.
· Ensure your writing is polished, engaging, and easy to follow.
· Avoid grammar/spelling mistakes and awkward sentence structure.
