In this week's readings (Biehl, J., & Eskerod, T (2007). Will to live: AIDS therapies and the politics of survival. 200. Princeton University Press.) we have covered broader socio-economic and political changes, including the implementation of SAPs, in the context of the emergence and spread of HIV/AIDS. Yet, Brazil, developed a distinct healthcare program despite required spending cuts, which affected the funding of social services, including health. For this week's essay you need to critically evaluate the pros and cons of neoliberal reforms in Brazil (such as SAPs). You will need to consider at least two levels of impact: 1) The broader social impact in handling the HIV/AIDS epidemic; and 2) The more localized social and individual impact on the marginalized, such as the so called "street patients." It is highly recommended that you use the study guide and clear examples from the assigned readings. Remember to evaluate your statements critically and support them with evidence. The incorporation of extra personal reflections and/or personal examples is welcome (but it cannot substitute the due readings).

Note: This is how should you format your paper:

  1. Give a title to your paper (i.e. "Week One Paper"; "Understanding Global Health…"; ext.)
  2. Length: 2-page long, not including List of References, which you need to add at the end (see syllabus for more details).
  3. Double-space text with Times New Roman font size 12.
  4. Personal Details: ALWAYS include your full name and student number in your weekly papers.
  5. Remember to demonstrate that you have carefully and thoroughly done the required readings. ALWAYS acknowledge your sources in-text AND in the List of References at the end (see syllabus for more detail).
