Would you support the installation of new hydropower projects on rivers in the southern Andes of Chile?
In order to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and reduce its dependence on foreign energy sources, the Chilean government has set a goal for 70% of Chile’s electricity to be generated from renewable sources by 2050. The proposal is to build five large dams on rivers fed by the ice fields in largely undeveloped regions.
Some argue that these projects will do great ecological damage and significant social damage, owing to the displacement of several small communities.

▶ If you were the Chilean Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, how would you balance the opportunities to reduce fossil fuel use against the potential environmental impacts of projects of this sort?

Guidelines
You must have five pro/con bullet points to back up the defense of your position or stance.
A couple of pros and a couple of cons, a total of five in all.
You must have a minimum of 5 sources for your pros/cons, one for each bullet point. These should be in the form of a url for the internet site that you got your information from. Do not give me the url for the search engine page, I want actual links to articles and information.
. However, if all your pros/cons come from the same source make sure to us an asterisk to point that out. For example: *All my pros and cons come from the same source, link to the source.
Your final discussion/defense should be at least 200 words in length.

Plantations
Position: I would not generally advise changing natural forests into plantations as the main method of conservation but planned, small plantations can be the supporting approach.
Pros and Cons with Sources
· Pro -More timber per hectare: Plantations will be able to generate more timber on smaller land areas, which may alleviate the stress on undisturbed forests. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/am/pii/S0378112722000974
· Pro - Economic efficiency: The high rate of growth of plantations contributes to the livelihoods and industry by providing a source of wood to the global world. https://ourworldindata.org/forests-and-deforestation
· Con -Reduced biodiversity: Natural forests maintain a vast number of species compared to plantations, which undermines the resilience of the ecosystems. https://www.worldwildlife.org/threats/deforestation-and-forest-degradation
· Con- Lower ecosystem services: Natural forests are better at storing carbon, controlling water and protection of soils than monocultures. frontiersin.org/journals/forests-and-global-change/articles/10.3389/ffgc.2020.00058/full
· Con- Intensive management impacts: Fertilizers, herbicides and use of fire may destroy soils and surrounding habitats. https://www.fao.org/fileadmin/user_upload/soils/publications/pesticides.pdf
Discussion / Defense
Plantations have evident benefits of production, whereas it is not right to compare them to conservation. Natural forests are complicated ecological systems developed within long periods of time. They maintain the biodiversity, control the climate, preserve the watersheds and hold quantities of carbon. When simplified plantations are taken instead of such systems, these gains are usually lost. Plantations cannot ensure that the pressure of logging is reduced as they can supply wood more efficiently. In other instances, plants come up as the natural forest is still being lost and not replaced.
Conservation wise, one should avoid the degradation of the remaining forests. Plantations can be useful in situations where they are built on degraded or already cleared land which can be of economic value and where plantations can also produce some cover of trees without interfering with high value ecosystems. The transformation of the natural forests, which exist, threatens to cause an irreparable ecological disaster. Loss of biodiversity, changed hydrology and depletion of soil could offset potential timber increments.
Therefore, I would recommend that we should secure the natural forests initially after which plantations should be utilized strategically to satisfy the demand of wood and restore the fallen landscape. This moderation style acknowledges economic realities and does not compromise on long term environmental sustainability.
