Module 1: Discussion forum: Psychology as a science and psychological phenomena
Review the resources included in each subtopic. Identify the process that led to the study of individual behavior becoming the science we call psychology and discuss what the scientific method is and how it solidified the study of behavior. Based on the information reviewed, provide a paragraph in which you discuss the aforementioned topic of how psychology is a science and what distinguishes it.

Foundations of human behavior and ethics in psychology
Topic 1: Why study behavior as a scientific field? Main debates and perspectives
For many years, psychologists were not defined as scientists. Some texts refer to early psychologists as biased, privileged, and comparing their methods to common sense or logic. This is not necessarily wrong. In fact, many of the pioneers of the field were just sharing their ideas and thoughts about behavior. For context, it’s important to also recognize there was not an established and objective method for studying behavior at the time. It has taken many years of growth and development for the field of psychology to be able to distinguish themselves as a scientific field (Feldman et al., 2017). Not all psychologists specialize in research, but they are mental health experts who can interpret scientific findings to apply in their professional practice. Psychology is a social science that has established strict guidelines for research and practice, which include a significant focus on ethical principles. Because behavior can be so diverse and influenced by different stimuli, applying the scientific method to the field is necessary to be able to study it as objectively as possible. As previously discussed, one of the basic questions that led to the foundation of the field of psychology as a social science is the nature v. nurture debate. The debate focuses on what parts of an individual's behavior are due to nature or genetics and what part are due to upbringing, which includes the physical and social environment. Currently, the nature or nurture debate has been settled. The scientific consensus in the field is that there are both internal and external forces, as well as an interaction between the two, that makes us develop and behave the way we do (Boyd & Bee, 2019). Nonetheless, understanding the debate and recognizing its importance in the development of the field is crucial. See Table 1 for further explanation about the nature or nurture debate.

· The idea is that we are born with specific tendencies that will cause us to behave in certain ways. There is a possibility that a baby is not a blank slate and there may be some predisposition. · There are certain processes that are almost identical in all infants, such as language acquisition, which provides support to the idea that some aspects of our behavior are inborn. · Some babies are easier to care for than others; it seems babies do have different temperaments. Are they born this way, or does it have to do with the prenatal environment? |
· The idea that the experiences we have and how we interpret them, have a strong influence in shaping our personality and behavior. · The meaning the individual attaches to an experience is particularly important. We are not always objective when we analyze our experiences in life. · Our relationships with others are directly influenced by how we interpret their comments and interactions. |
(Adapted from Boyd & Bee, 2019) [1]
Contrary to popular ideas about love and other emotions coming from the heart, the brain is the main organ responsible for human behavior. The brain and the other cells that influence our behavior are called the nervous system. The nervous system gives the instructions that allow the body to perform a specific action (Feldman et al., 2017). Humans have different sensory organs. Our five senses are sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. But it extends to pain, pressure, temperature, vibrations because we are sensitive not only to touch but to a set of stimuli. Psychologists understand the senses in the context of sensation and perception. Sensation refers to the activation of the sensory organs by a physical energy source, while perception is the classification, interpretation, analysis, and integration of stimuli by the sensory organs and the brain. Stimulus is any source of energy that when passing produces a response in a sensory organ. In general, the field of psychology has five main perspectives, which consider different ways of explaining and comprehending human behavior (Feldman et al., 2017). These perspectives are:
· Studies behavior by focusing on biological functioning
· Cognitive perspective
· Studies the way people understand and think about the world
· Behavioral perspective
· Focuses on observable behavior
· Humanist perspective
· Establishes that people can control their behavior and will try to achieve their maximum potential
· Psychodynamic perspective
· Considers behavior is motivated by unconscious internal forces (and people have very little control over these forces)
These should feel familiar to you since they were discussed briefly in Module 1. To acquire a deeper understanding, let’s analyze how these perspectives can be considered the roots of the field. For example, the following subspecialties and proficiencies in psychology can be related to these main perspectives. For example, the neuroscience perspective provides the basis for the area of neuropsychology. Can you identify them? Select a fundamental perspective for each of these examples (See figure 1).

If you made a connection between the subspecialties in Figure 1 in the same order the perspectives are presented in the previous section, then you are correct. If you did not, take the time to read more about the perspectives and understand how they relate to these subspecialties in the field.
As we continue to learn more about the development of the field and human behavior, I encourage you to make connections between the material and these examples of debates and perspectives in psychology.
Topic 2: Ethics in Psychology
Ethics is an important area in all disciplines of knowledge. Because psychology studies the behavior of the individual, it is necessary to have a solid code of ethics. Ethical considerations are of relevance in the scientific research carried out in the area, as well as in the treatment of individuals who request psychological services (Feldman, 2017). Therefore, the discipline has very strict guidelines for all mental health experts that consider how ethics apply to the diverse subspecialties.
Psychology as a profession has joined forces to establish a general code of ethics and other specific ones by subspecialty and by region. In general, there is variation between them, although they coincide in fundamental canons. The American Psychological Association (APA) is the most well-known and respected organization in the United States and has a general code of ethics for psychologists. In Puerto Rico (PR), for example, there is the Puerto Rico Psychology Association (ASPPR). Follow the links and review the codes of ethics that govern discipline in the US and PR.
