Presenting Problem

Mr. and Mrs. Smith are trying to help their son, Charlie, but they are feeling overwhelmed. They are struggling to understand how his addiction started and how to best help him.

Smith Family Members

The Smith family consists of five members: Mr. and Mrs. Smith (the parents), John (the oldest son, aged 23), Sarah (the daughter, aged 18), and Charlie (the youngest son, aged 15).

Family Background

The Smith family has a history of long-term struggles with addiction. Mr. Smith has a long history of alcohol abuse, and he has been working a program of recovery through AA for the last 12 years. Mrs. Smith has chronic back pain, and her family believes that she has been abusing her pain medications for the last couple of years. When asked about these behaviors, she denies that it is a problem, and she is only taking them for pain. John has graduated from college and is working in IT. He was a heavy drinker in college; however, he has cut back his use. He currently lives in another state with his girlfriend. Sarah has experimented with drugs and alcohol in the past but did not like how they made her feel out of control. She is the caretaker of the family and feels responsible for taking care of her mother and older brother. Charlie has been struggling with addiction for the past few years. He will regularly sneak out of the house at night to use substances with his friends. His drugs of choice are alcohol and pot, which he gets from his older friends. In recent months, his behavior has become more erratic and his grades in school have been slipping. He has been engaging in risky behaviors and has been arrested for shoplifting and possession of alcohol.
